Research Projects

The project focuses on the conditions of public art –its driving forces, aims andconflicts –taken as an indicator for the premises for attaining the broader political aims of sustainable planning and design. Based on case studies, and using the camera as research tool, we explore actors, organizations and processes in disparate municipalities. Some of the material will be presented as a film, aimed as a platform for sharing knowledge and to further discussions on art, democracy and sustainability.

The project develops methods and analytic models to better understand systemic differences in how cities are differently accessible for different people and groups. The focus is on accessibility as it is understood in universal design in relation to disabilities. The project is in cooperation with a municipalityas well as disability rights organizations. The project furthermore develops how these challenges can be better integrated in different levels of municipal planning.

The economic transformations and the social processes that emerged at the end of the 20th century raise fundamental questions for Architecture and Urbanism -understood both as a field of knowledge and as intervention in cities. These changes demandcritical renewal of disciplines engaged with the conception and production of space in order to continue to fight for an informed and open-minded transformation of the city.

Seminar series

Segregation may be understood from many different perspectives and the project describes, defines and investigates segregation taking architectural space into account. The role of urban design and planning in relation to segregation and unequal living conditions is highlighted through spatial analysis; configurative analysis and accessibility analysis that captures the living conditions in different part of the city. The project is mapping the living conditions for Uppsala and develops methods for comparing different districts and places in the city.

Transportation and mobility in relation to sport and outdoors is today far from sustainable. In the project and within the theme ‘Transportation’, we explore new approaches, tools, and methods that may support planning for a more sustainable outdoor life. The possibilities for physical activities in everyday life, and to have access to recreation becomes increasingly important for wellbeing and public health in general. It is important to have access to such functions in an easy and sustainable way, for all social groups.

MAPURBAN brings to light differences in access to urban resources across the socio-economic and ethnic profile of three major cities, Stockholm, Berlin and London. MAPURBAN Stockholmwill focus on urban inequalities by mapping and visualizing access to important societal functions. The initiative highlights access to cultural institutions and places important for co-presence and integration processes.

The Smart Streets project aims to develop models for multifunctional streets, which can be used in redevelopment and new construction, and which meet the challenges of future urbanization, digitalization, electrification, segregation and climate change. Among other things, the project will also compile knowledge and experiences about the multifunctionality of different street types, build a simulator that shows the user experience of these street types and produce a guide for smart streets in Swedish urban areas.

The continuous transformation Stockholm comes with challenges but it is also an opportunity to develop the city in line with the city planning objectives formulatedin the comprehensive plan. This project investigates contextual impact of development projects in Stockholm, analyzing how surrounding urban conditions are affected. This analysis will look at a range of different effects as well as how changes spread over both time and space.

Urban segregation and unequal living conditions are urgent contemporary challenges. This project has studied the changes of urban habits during the pandemic and has used a web-based map questionnaire to collect data combined with data from Twitter.These changes have been related to what amenities and resources different neighbourhoods provide. and further relates this to urban morphology. One aim is to contribute to knowledge of how urban design influence living conditions.

Decode addresses societal challenges of how to model a democratic and constructive urban development process, where participants with differing expertise, interests and time perspective can participate.
